The Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China is among the most impressive feats of human engineering and a testament to the power of the Chinese Empire. Stretching over 6,000 kilometres, the wall was built to protect the Chinese from invading Mongols and other northern nomads. The wall is made of stone, brick, tamped earth, and wood, which took over 2,000 years to build. Today, the Great Wall is a popular tourist destination symbol of China’s rich history and culture.
Hagia Sophia
The Hagia Sophia, also known as the Ayasofya and Holy Wisdom, is a former Christian cathedral and later mosque, now a museum, in Istanbul, Turkey. It was built in the 6th century by the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I and was the largest cathedral in the world for almost a thousand years until the construction of the Seville Cathedral in 1520.
Petra
Petra is an archaeological and historical city in the southern region of the Jordanian governorate, Ma’an. Incidentally, this is well-known for its water conduit system and rock-cut architecture. Established sometime around the 6th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataean Kingdom, Petra flourished through its trade in frankincense, spices, and other goods. It declined as a result of the Roman conquest of the Levant in the 1st century AD and was eventually abandoned. It remained unknown to the Western world until 1812 when Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it.
Mount Everest
The world’s tallest mountain is Mount Everest. It is situated in the sub-range of the Himalayas’ Mahalangur Himal. The international border between Nepal and China runs across the precise summit point. Mount Everest is part of the Seven Summits, the highest mountain on each of the seven continents.
The Golden Temple
The Golden Temple or Sri Harmandir Sahib is a gurdwara situated in India, Amritsar, Punjab to be exact. It is a highly regarded and most sacred site for Sikhs and is considered a symbol of their faith. The temple was built in the 16th century by Guru Amar Das, the third Sikh Guru, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is built on a man-made lake and is surrounded by a wall. The main entrance is through a causeway, and four doors represent the four directions. The main sanctuary is in the middle of the lake and is reached by a bridge. The temple is made of gold and marble and is adorned with precious stones. The temple is open to all, regardless of caste, creed, or religion. It is a place of pilgrimage for Sikhs from all over the world and is also visited by tourists from all over the world.
One of the most remarkable things about Asia is its sheer size. It is the largest contingent on earth and is home to more than 60% of the world’s population.
