Election Information

This site has one main purpose: to make better district maps than the state does. The state district site is difficult to use with an abominable color scheme, so this site will provide a better resource for people who wish to see the districts they are located in. The other reason is for politically obsessed persons, since it gives a pretty nice view of what party is elected where.

This site uses of Google Maps and the GIS Data that can be obtained from the Colorado government, with the GIS data edited for compactness. This may produce errors in the map, so please do not use this as definite source for who represents you. To be absolutely sure, I suggest using Project VoteSmart.

There are currently three types of maps you can peruse.

- The dynamic maps allow for a display of districts based on a zip code or to show multiple districts at once.

- The maps that can be found in the bottom link bar are maps of individual districts or counties. In the case of districts, the election results and party demographics from 2004 and 2006 are currently available.

For counties, data from the 2004 and 2006 elections are available, with small fractions of 1998, 2000, and 2002. All counties have not been completed, but will be shortly. The previous year eletion results will be added as time permits. County maps also display the age/party distribution from 2006, with estimated 2006 populations from the Census website. Since they are population estimations, they are only there as crude guideline to show the overall fraction of registered voters.

- The final set of maps, under Regional Maps, give county commissioner and/or city councilman districts for selected counties. Also in this area is RTD Districts, which have not been updated. I have an updated file, but other priorities are more urgent.
Demographics can be found on each district, and the other data, such as the candidates for the latest election and biographies of each person will be added as time permits.

These maps and pages will work in Opera 8+, IE 6 and greater, Firefox, Mozilla, and Safari. They will not work in IE 5, or an older version of Netscape. See Compatability for potential problems

Updates

1/21/08: Additional websites have been added. In addition, KML files are going to become the default load method, with a rework of the loading scripts and everything else. Pages will shift over to a new naming system, and the old pages will remain as valid links. Once again, if you need me to update or include a 2008 candidate webpage, e-mail me at webmaster@comaps.org.

11/18/07: Campaign website and candidates have been added. If you are not on the list and should be or if I am missing your website, please let me know. In addition, the SOS results from October 2007 have been added. This will be updated to the 2007 election numbers when released by the Secretary of State. County eleciton results from the 2007 race will not be added unless there is a demand for it.

08/23/07: Fixed some stupid database bugs. Also, to all of the people who use these maps on their campaign sites, the next project is adding these to the site. So if you use/borrow the map, you might as well send me your site link so I don't have to search for you.

05/27/07: Individual maps can be shown with using fixed or dynamic scale bars. This is allows for a more direct comparison of maps. The other thing left to tweak is the color bar at the bottom of the page. All maps now show the correct labels dependent, with Yes/No labels on referenda and scale bar on all maps regardless of type.

05/01/07: Domain name registration went awry, so comaps.org works, but www.comaps.org leads to a crap page. It should be fixed, but it has to propagate through the DNS servers.

04/13/07: Relatively important update - every results now links to an Individual race page, where there is a map generated showing the proportion of Democratic and Republican voters for that race alone. There are still problems which I will try to fix over the weekend, including adding a fixed scale so the map better quantify the results seen. But even now, they are pretty cool. The 2006 Governor's Race, for example.

03/26/07: Party registration data by county from 1992 to 2006 is available in the county pages. The 2000 data is clearly wrong, so I have removed that. I need to go back the library to try to find the 2000 Abstract of Votes put out by the Secretary of State. Appendix B is almost complete, as is Appendix C.

An interesting fact that nobody recognizes anymore: in 1992, the state had a plurality of registered Democrats. In 2006, the state has aded close to one million new voters. Of that extra million, 40.6% of them are Republican, 22.3% Democrat, and the remainder Unaffiliated.

03/15/07: A bit more data, and the beginning of the Appendices, starting with Appendix A: State Represenatives and State Senators from 2000 to 2007.

02/07/07: The equivalent of version 2 of this site is now online. All maps are updated, except for the regional maps.

02/23/07: A few minor bug edits, plus I have added Google Earth Data (KML) files for the Colorado House and Senate Districts.

Compatability

Known Issues:
The main current issue if the problem with Safari, in that filled polygons of greater than 100 points crash Safari. As of now, there is a browser detection script in place that defaults to polylines, the originial method on this site. No other broswer I have tested causes this error, but if another does, contact me and I will try to determine the cause and if it is fixable.

Note that the polygon drawing is far more complex than the previous method of showing regions of space. It may have a slight delay. I am working on allowing the browser to choose which method is best dependent on either a cookie or a passed parameter. Once that is done, I will post a link to how to fix this issue..

XML files will sometimes load the old files if they are still in your cache, making the script faster. This may mean you get inaccurate data. Currently, the most inaccurate data on the site is the webpages of the representatives themselves, since they enjoy changing them or just having them disappear off the Internet altogether.
