District 8 spans the northwest corner of the state, from the Never Summer Wilderness Area near Rocky Mountain National Park to the Utah border. Most of the population is located near the I-70 corridor, located in Eagle and Garfield counties. Routt County is where Steamboat Springs is located, with natural hot springs and a popular ski area in the winter. The rest of the district is sparsely populated, with Jackson County's population fewer than 1600 people. An interesting historical note is the Great Diamond Hoax in 1872, which occurred north of the current Dinosaur National Monument in Moffat County. Clarence King, a geologist, exposed the hoax diamond field. You can apparently still visit the site and find the salted diamonds that were used to create the hoax. As a warning, the salted diamonds were worthless in the 1880, so their value is largely in the unique nature of the story.
